Prof. Dr. Kenan Övünç was born in Zonguldak Central District in 1956. He completed his primary and secondary education in Zonguldak and graduated from Mehmet Çelikel High School in 1973. In the same year, he started Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 1980.
After working as a doctor at the Turkish State Institute of Statistics for a short time, he started his internal medicine specialty training at Çukurova University in December 1980. In March 1985, he became an internal medicine specialist and went to military service. He completed his military service at Ankara Mevki Hospital in September 1986.
Between October 1986 and October 1988, he did compulsory service at Ankara Etimesgut Regional Hospital, a joint venture between Hacettepe University and the Turkish Ministry of Health.
In November 1988, he started his Cardiology Specialty Training at the Turkish High Specialization Hospital in Ankara, Turkey and became a Cardiology Specialist in November 1990. After working as a Cardiology Specialist in the same Hospital for 2 years and improving his skills in Interventional Cardiology and Echocardiography, he started to work at Hacettepe University, Department of Cardiology in October 2002. He became Assistant Professor in 1992, Associate Professor in 1993 and Professor in 2000.
He was part of the Team that developed and established the Contemporary Applications in Echocardiography and Interventional Cardiology and Clinical Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology at Hacettepe University Cardiology Department. He participated in the first Complex Coronary Angioplasty and Stenting, first Alcohol Septal Ablation, first Mitral-Pulmonary-Aortic Valve Valvuloplasty, first ICD (implanted cardioverter-defibrillator), first Biventricular Pacemaker and ICD, Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation. He performed the first Transösefageal Echocardiography (TEE) and the first Head Upright Tilt test at Hacettepe University Cardiology.
He performed the first Balloon Pericardiostomy and the first Percutaneous Atrial Septal Defect Closure in Adults in Turkey.
He served as the Chairman of the Coronary Artery Disease Study Group of the Turkish Society of Cardiology for a period and as the Secretary of the Echocardiography Study Group for a period.
Prof. Dr. Kenan Övünç retired from Hacettepe University, Department of Cardiology in February 2023 and is married with one daughter.
