Hand Burns

Hand burns are a very important pathological condition with negative effects on human life, especially in the age of industrialization. Although the hands make up 5% of the human body, they are involved in 80% of burns. Therefore, there is a treatment plan that requires special importance and effort due to the functional problems and some aesthetic problems it causes in the early or late period.

In burns, there may be a loss of surface in the hand. We know that there is a different anatomical structure between the back of the hand and the palm. The back of the hand has a softer tissue and a thinner subcutaneous tissue, but the palm has a thicker covering.
Because of this feature, the burn deformity, which immediately manifests itself on the dorsum of the hand, attracts our attention only after the function of the palm is impaired. For this reason, in order to take precautions, all hand burns should be classified as serious and the necessary care should be taken.

Burn treatment is carried out with both surgical procedures and antibiotic and dressing procedures from the first moment.  Resting position and functional fixation with appropriate splinting should be considered in order to prevent a functional failure in the hand in later periods. Edema of the hand is a pathological condition that occurs during the wound healing period and has the risk of causing stiffness in the joints. In this period, keeping the hand in the position in which the patient feels comfortable is the easiest way to form contractures. In order to prevent this, appropriate splints should be made as if the person is uncomfortable and then physical therapy should be applied to regain hand functions.
